Checking Out the Project Websites

This week, I visited the project websites for our Fashion and Identity course. It was really nice to see what my colleagues have been working on and how their sites are coming together! Two of the websites that stood out to me were by the students in Montevallo and MSU. These two groups had quite a bit of information already on their webpages, so it was interesting to see all of the research they had gathered for the project.

The students at the University of Montevallo compared fashion trends of the nineteen-eighties and present day within their university. The home page of the website was intriguing, and it let me know some background information about Montevallo and the project. Adding this information at the beginning with the central images and map was a nice touch as it drew me in immediately.  I also found the images incorporated into the website really fascinating, and I especially liked the newspapers about campus fashion! I also liked the images on the campus’s nineteen-eighties’ fashion, but I felt like something was missing from the page. Maybe adding written descriptions of the clothing or giving the images an individual tittle could be helpful.

The other project website that stood out to me was created by Ashlee Fandrich and Catherine Stepniak from Midwestern State University (MSU). They focused their site on the fashions of the nineties within different student organizations throughout campus.  What I really enjoyed about their website was how clearly the site was organized and how easy it was to navigate. I also loved how thorough Ashlee and Catherine were when speaking about each organization’s fashion. The Juxtapose comparisons and sidebar galleries were also a nice touch. I am curious about how the pair will incorporate their interview(s) onto their site. Will the interviews be on a separate page(s) or will they be linked within each organization’s page?

Looking over my colleagues’ websites was a lot of fun, but it definitely made me realize just how much I have to do get my own website in order! Best of luck on all your drafts!

  1. Thanks for your comments! We were going for a minimalistic look. The interviews will be on the conclusion page.

  2. Hi!

I’m glad you liked our background information about Montevallo. We weren’t sure if we needed to include that, so that’s encouraging. We still need to add written descriptions to our website, so you are definitely right that those are missing. Thanks for looking at our website!

    Adios!

  3. Ambar–I think you are on track with your comments. I agree that Montevallo has some great pictures but needs a bit more explanation and analysis. Sometimes, I lose track of its thesis and how it is being supported. MSU does have an effective structure/outline! It drew me in, and I found myself wanting, again, more critical insight into how these scholars interpreted the primary sources they found. Dr. Brown
